Region- a region is defined by its uniform physical or human characteristics
Formal region- an area that is defined by clear delineated boundaries
Functional Region- (Nodal Regions) usually encompasses a central point with defined boundaries and the area around it that is connected via a well developed network of transportation and communication systems that facilitate the movement of people, goods, and ideas within that system
Vernacular Region- a distinctive area where the people collectively consider themselves interconnected by a shared history, mutual interests, and a common identity

A formal region is defined by clear lines and boundaries which makes it exact. A functional region is based off of a central point and then everything around the center point is described based on the center, its surroundings are described. A vernacular region is an area that is grouped together because of mutual interests. A formal region is the most exact and then a functional region and the least descriptive is the vernacular region.

assignment nine

Location- particular place or position
Place- the physical and human aspects of an location
Toponym- the name of the place
Site- the description of the features of the place (physical characteristics)
Situation- the environmental conditions of the place (relative location)

3 ways geographers describe location
  1. Toponym
  2. Site
  3. Situation
If I was settling in 1650, I would build my town on location C. For site, location C is the best because it is near an ocean, good farmland, and their are no mountains or sandbars nearby. For situation, location C is the second best because it is near good farmland and you can grow crops which you can sell over the ocean that they have good access too. Without the mountains or sandbars travel is easy from place to place.

If I was settling in 1830, I would build my new settlement on location C. Location C has the best physical features because there is a freshwater swamp nearby and an ocean. Since the population is growing quickly and they need a reliable power source they can use the ocean for hydroelectricity. The settlement would be nearby a freshwater swamp so the people can drink freshwater easily.

If I was settling in 1880, I would build my town on location C. For site, location C is near good farmland, the ocean and it isn't in any mountains. For situation, railroads are becoming very popular and location C is on coal. Coal powers the trains on the railroads and will be very helpful for transportation.
